Penstock Rehabilitations
ACT has completed several penstock rehabilitation projects for Ontario Power Generation (formerly Ontario Hydro) including several penstock relining projects at the Des Joachims Generating Station.
ACT was responsible for grouting in-place a newly installed steel penstock liner. We utilized pre-packaged cementitious grout to guarantee that a consistent end product would be provided. Grouting of the steel liner was performed in controlled lifts designed to minimize any thermal and stress effects on the newly installed steel liner. Lifts were staggered 8-12 hours apart to allow previous lifts to attain initial set prior to proceeding.
Extensive testing of freshly batched grout was performed throughout construction to ensure a high level of quality control for the in place grout.
Upon completion of the bulk grouting of the steel liner, ACT installed a series of contact grout verification holes to ensure the new liner was fully encapsulated.
In addition to the penstock work, we diamond core drilled new gain heater holes in the headworks, diamond drilled relief drains through the floor of each penstock transition terminating in the gallery, and performed chemical grouting of cracks and joints throughout the headworks.
Project was completed during the fall and early winter without delays.
